| [I] Help with reading Google Groups, please. [message #262417] |

Hi
Hoping for some help... My ISP (Xtra) has just announced that they
won't be subscribing to Usenet anymore. I am trying to use google
groups, but I am finding it quite frustrating! Can anyone suggest
another way to access Usenet?
I'm fairly sure this has been discussed, but when I search, I get
between 3,000 and 8,000+ hits! I'm hoping some kind soul can point
me towards a relevant thread?
Thanks in advance. I'm quite new to this, and I get a bit boggled at
times!

I'm sorry - I'm sure I put an [I] tag on this, but it seems to have
vanished.
Apologies

It was there, but Google eats tags, alas.
If you're willing to pay a little bit, there's
<http://news.individual.net/>. 10 euro per year for pretty good access.
I've been using it for ages.

It was there Google groups just hid it. It also removed the tag from
your reply. When replying to a post on google groups click show options
at the top of the post, then Reply. This will bring up the post with
space underneath, type your post underneath, remembering to cut out any
irrelevant bits. Also you'll need to put the tag back in. I think if you
have a character that's not space after the square bracket that the tag
stays in.

This is a list of free news servers. Some allow posting, most don't carry
binaries.
Hope it helps.

There is also this : http://www.teranews.com/index.html
(a free news server, with a one-time connection fee of $3.95)
I haven't used it, so no personal recommendation offered.

That (as has already been mentioned) is googles fault. But there are
ways arround the google groups shortcomings (so long as you have a good
memory.) I think this
http://web.netyp.com/member/dragon/afp/afpgooglefaq.htm has most of the
important bits. I think I saw a rumour somewhere that google was going
to fix the tag stripping bit of code, but...
FWIW I still use google groups.

Aargh! No! It's out of date owing to changes that Google made some
months ago. I am now removing it from the Web to avoid future
confusion.

If you only want the Pratchett groups there is news.lspace.org
(http://www.lspace.org/fandom/news/index.html)
But otherwise, I would recomend news.individual, net, easily worth the 10
euro pr year in my opinion.
